How to Ask God For Forgiveness

When we truly want to be forgiven, we search out the sin we are seeking forgiveness of. We look deeply into what evil desire of our nature was followed to convert this temptation into a sin. Sin doesn’t just happen, we are tempted first. We are tempted in our own desires. When we follow our desires the temptation is usually blamed for our sin. No temptation is so strong that we cannot overcome it. Temptation is not the cause. It’s only our excuse as a reason for committing the sin.

We need to look a close look at our desires. Why did we do what we did. Was it for physical pleasure? Was it our ego, was it our pride, was it our selfishness, was it greed. We have to look until we find the specific desire that was tempted and why we followed it into the sin. When we find the desire we analyze and learn how it influences our heart. When we learn its operating mode we form a plan to avoid it next time.

When we know our motive and our action, we bring them to God in prayer and ask Him to forgive us of this sin. We talk to Him and show Him our plan and ask Him to check our plan for His way. If it is not His way we will soon find out. Sometimes we find out through other people, sometimes by reading the Word. It can just come to us by the consequences it causes when we put it in play. Once we find out we go to God again to ask His guidance in working our plan.
