Proverbs
Chapter 20
1 Wine
is a mocker,
strong drink is
raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Gen 9:21 And he drank of the
wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
2 The fear of a king
is as the
roaring of a lion:
whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth
against his own
soul.
Prov 19:12 The king's wrath
is as the
roaring of a lion; but his favour
is as dew upon
the grass.
Prov 8:36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own
soul: all they that hate me love death.
3
It is an honour
for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be
meddling.
Prov 17:14 The beginning of strife
is as when one
letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it
be meddled with.
4 The sluggard will not
plow by reason of the cold;
therefore shall
he beg in harvest, and
have nothing.
Prov 10:4 He becometh poor
that dealeth with
a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Prov 19:15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an
idle soul shall suffer hunger.
5 Counsel in the heart
of man is like
deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
6 Most men will proclaim
every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
Matt 6:2 Therefore when thou doest
thine
alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have
glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself,
God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men
are,
extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
Luke 18:8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.
Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith
on the earth?
7 The just
man walketh in
his integrity: his children
are blessed
after him.
2 Cor 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our
conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with
fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our
conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
Psalms 37:26 He is
ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed
is blessed.
8 A king that sitteth in
the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his
eyes.
Prov 20:26 A wise king
scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them
9 Who can say, I have
made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
1 Kings 8:46 If they sin
against thee, (for
there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be
angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they
carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or
near;
10 Divers weights,
and divers
measures, both of them
are alike abomination to the LORD.
Deut 25:13 Thou shalt not have
in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.
11 Even a child is known
by his doings, whether his work
be pure, and
whether it be
right.
Matt 7:16 Ye shall know them by their
fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
12 The hearing ear, and
the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
Exodus 4:11 And the LORD said
unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb,
or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
13 Love not sleep, lest
thou come to poverty; open thine eyes,
and thou shalt
be satisfied with bread.
Rom 12:11 Not slothful in
business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
14
It is naught,
it is
naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then
he boasteth.
15 There is gold, and a
multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge
are a precious
jewel.
Prov 3:15 She
is more
precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire
are not to be compared unto her.
16 Take his garment that
is surety for
a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
Prov 22:26 Be not thou
one of them
that strike hands, or
of them that are sureties for debts.
17 Bread of deceit
is sweet to a
man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Prov 9:17 Stolen waters are
sweet, and bread eaten
in secret is pleasant.
18
Every purpose
is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
Prov 24:6 For by wise counsel
thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors
there is safety
Luke 14:31 Or what king, going to make
war against another king, sitteth not down first, and
consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him
that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
19 He that goeth about
as a
talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him
that flattereth with his lips.
Prov 11:13 A talebearer
revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit
concealeth the matter.
Rom 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus
Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair
speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
20 Whoso curseth his
father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure
darkness.
Matt 15:4
For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother:
and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the
death.
Job 18:5 Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put
out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.
Job 18:6 The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his
candle shall be put out with him.
21 An inheritance
may be gotten
hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be
blessed.
Prov 28:20 A faithful man
shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be
rich shall not be innocent.
Hab 2:6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him,
and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that
increaseth that which
is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth
himself with thick clay!
22 Say not thou, I will
recompense evil; but
wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Rom 12:17 Recompense to no man
evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all
men.
2 Samuel 16:12 It may be that the LORD will look on mine
affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his
cursing this day.
23 Divers weights
are an
abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance
is not good.
24 Man's goings
are of the
LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
Psalms 37:23 The steps of a
good man
are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
25
It is a snare
to the man who
devoureth that which is
holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
Eccl 5:4 When thou vowest a
vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for
he hath no
pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.
Eccl 5:5 Better is it
that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow
and not pay.
26 A wise king
scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
Psalms 101:8 I will early
destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all
wicked doers from the city of the LORD.
27 The spirit of man
is the candle
of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
1 Cor 2:11 For what man
knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is
in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the
Spirit of God.
28 Mercy and truth
preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
29 The glory of young
men is
their strength: and the beauty of old men
is the gray
head.
Prov 16:31 The hoary head
is a crown of
glory, if
it be found in the way of righteousness.
30 The blueness of a
wound cleanseth away evil: so
do stripes the
inward parts of the belly.
