Proverbs
Chapter 17
1 Better
is a dry
morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of
sacrifices with
strife.
Prov 15:17 Better
is a dinner of
herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
2 A wise servant shall
have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part
of the inheritance among the brethren.
Prov 10:5 He that gathereth in
summer is a
wise son: but
he that sleepeth in harvest
is a son that
causeth shame.
3 The fining pot
is for silver,
and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
Jer 17:10 I the LORD search
the heart, I
try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways,
and
according to the fruit of his doings.
4 A wicked doer giveth
heed to false lips; and
a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
5 Whoso mocketh the poor
reproacheth his Maker:
and he that is glad at calamities shall not be
unpunished.
Prov 14:31 He that oppresseth
the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him
hath mercy on the poor.
6 Children's children
are the
crown of old men; and the glory of children
are their
fathers.
7 Excellent speech
becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 A gift
is as a
precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it:
whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 He that covereth a
transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter
separateth very
friends.
Prov 10:12 Hatred stirreth up
strifes: but love covereth all sins.
Prov 16:28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer
separateth chief friends.
10 A reproof entereth
more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 An evil
man seeketh
only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent
against him.
12 Let a bear robbed of
her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
Hos 13:8 I will meet them as a
bear that is
bereaved of her whelps,
and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I
devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
13 Whoso rewardeth evil
for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
Psalms 109:4-5
4
For my love they are my adversaries: but I
give myself unto
prayer.
5
And they have rewarded me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.
Jer 18:20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have
digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee
to speak good for them,
and to turn
away thy wrath from them.
14 The beginning of
strife is as
when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention,
before it be meddled with.
Prov 20:3
It is an honour
for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be
meddling.
15 He that justifieth
the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both
are
abomination to the LORD.
Exod 23:7 Keep thee far from a
false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not:
for I will not justify the wicked.
Isaiah 5:23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take
away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
16 Wherefore
is there a
price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing
he hath no
heart to it?
Prov 21:25-6
25
The desire of the slothful killeth him;
for his hands refuse to labour.
26
He coveteth greedily all the day long: but
the righteous giveth and spareth not.
17 A friend loveth at
all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Ruth 1:16 And Ruth said,
Intreat me not to leave thee,
or to return
from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will
go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people
shall be my
people, and thy God my God:
18 A man void of
understanding striketh hands,
and becometh
surety in the presence of his friend.
Prov 6:1 My son, if thou be
surety for thy friend,
if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
19 He loveth
transgression that loveth strife:
and he that
exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
Prov 16:18 Pride
goeth before
destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
20 He that hath a
froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse
tongue falleth into mischief.
James 3:8 But the tongue can
no man tame; it is
an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
21 He that begetteth a
fool doeth it
to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
Prov 10:1 The proverbs of
Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son
is the
heaviness of his mother.
22 A merry heart doeth
good like a
medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Prov 12:25 Heaviness in the
heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it
glad.
Psalms 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and
my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into
the dust of death.
23 A wicked
man taketh a
gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
Exod 23:8 And thou shalt take
no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the
words of the righteous.
24 Wisdom
is before him
that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool
are in the ends
of the earth.
Eccl 2:14 The wise man's eyes
are in his
head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself
perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
25 A foolish son
is a grief to
his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
Prov 10:1 The proverbs of
Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son
is the
heaviness of his mother.
26 Also to punish the
just is not
good, nor
to strike princes for equity.
Prov 18:5
It is not good
to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the
righteous in judgment.
27 He that hath
knowledge spareth his words:
and a man of
understanding is of an excellent spirit.
James 1:19 Wherefore, my
beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to
speak, slow to wrath:
28 Even a fool, when he
holdeth his peace, is counted wise:
and he that
shutteth his lips is
esteemed a man of understanding.
Job 13:5 O that ye would
altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
